Flat roofs have a bad reputation
Thanks to advances in roofing technology and materials this should be a thing of the past. Modern high performance felts applied by qualified technicians should have a lifespan of over 30 years.
Unfortuantely due to inferior materials and unskilled workmen some flat roofs will still have problems. Breakdown of the roof covering within 3 to 5 years is usually due to overheating of the bitumen used in the application of the roof covering. Creasing and blistering of the membrane or leaks around upstands, outlets and perimeters are all signs of inferior materials or unskilled labour.
Correctly installed quality torch-on membranes will not leak.
Flat felt roofing is not just about square flat roofs. The modern torch-on membranes can be used in any number of situations:
